Course description

Objectives and Content

ENERGI230 aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the intricate relationship between energy production, its use, and its environmental implications. Through lectures, quizes, and group works, students explore topics such as energy transition, climate change, atmospheric pollution, and the carbon cycle. Additionally, students focus on specific case studies on renewable energy sources, indoor pollution, and the environmental footprints of energy-related activities. By studying impacts such as wind energy, energy transport, and materials used in the energy transition, the course ensures students not only grasp current energy-environment challenges but also anticipate future developments in this domain.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:


The student

  • can describe the environmental impact of various energy production systems and their utilization.
  • understands the concept and implications of the decarbonization of the energy sector.
  • can list and discuss evidence of climate change and its significance.
  • can explain how environmental factors influence the efficiency and feasibility of variable renewable energy sources


The student

  • can visually represent the relationship between energy transition and its impact on climate change.
  • can effectively access, extract, and utilize data from open-source online climate projection databases to inform energy policy decisions.
  • can critically interpret and analyze results from executive summaries regarding the environmental impacts of energy extraction, transformation, and utilization.


The student

  • is equipped to discuss the complexities and challenges associated with the environmental impact of energy consumption from varied perspectives.
  • can engage in informed debates on current challenges and potential solutions for energy transition scenarios.
  • can articulate and explain the principles, challenges, and environmental consequences of energy production and use to individuals without specialized knowledge in the field.

Access to the Course

Access to the course requires admission to the Integrated Masters Programme in Energy or equivalent at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences or the Master¿s programme in Sustainability at the Faculty of Humanities.

Teaching and learning methods
Lectures and exercises. Parts of the time allocated to exercise will be used for project work.
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

The assignments must be approved to be admitted to final exam.

Valid for two semesters: The semester the compulsory assignment was approved and the following semester

Forms of Assessment
Written exam, 4 hours counts 70%, project work and quizes counts 30%.
Grading Scale
The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
Assessment Semester
Examination both spring semester and autumn semester. In semesters without teaching the examination will be arranged at the beginning of the semester.
Reading List
The reading list will be available within July 1st for the autumn semester and January 1st for the spring semester.
Course Evaluation

The course will be evaluated by the students in accordance with the quality assurance system at UiB and the department.


Referents groups will be used each year.
