Course description
Objectives and Content
The course covers the chemistry of the most important drugs and drug classes, including three-dimensional configuration, synthesis, metabolism and stability. Furthermore, the relationship between the three-dimensional structure of drugs and the biological activity is emphasized.
The course will further serve as the basis for studies of pharmacology and pharmaceutics.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course in FARM236 the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge
The student
- Has broad knowledge of the physical-chemical properties of drug compounds
The student will from the structure of a compound be able to
- elaborate on the likely therapeutic use (drug class)
- explain the mechanism of action
Skills
The student will from the structure of a compound be able to
- discuss possible binding interactions with biological macromolecules
- discuss properties such as stability and water solubility
- discuss absorption, distribution, metabolism, elimination and toxicity
General competence
The student
- Knows how drug compounds are discovered and developed
