Course description
Objectives and Content
INFO100 will provide a basic introduction to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and their uses in society. The course will also provide a basic introduction to the problems addressed by information science theories and technologies. It will also give relevant examples of information science research and research method. The course includes laboratory assignments that provide basic experience in practical work with ICT tools.
The course briefly covers the following three areas:
- Basic information and communication technology including computer and software architecture, network and database, information system and user interface.
- A societal perspective on ICT, issues involving privacy, ethics, vulnerability, security and ICT policy.
- Examples of information science research, problems addressed by information science and information science research method.
Learning Outcomes
A student who has completed the course should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge
- The student will be able to
- describe the theoretical and technological foundations of information and communication technology.
- describe the problems being addressed by information science and apply fundamental information science technologies for problem solving.
- acquire theoretical knowledge of the role of ICT in society.
Skill
The student
- can use selected ICT technologies and tools
- can participate in certain practical ICT projects which include web technologies
- can discuss ICT, ICT use and the role of ICT in the society.

Teaching and learning methods
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
Mandatory assignments for lab assignments (80%), which must be passed and approved during the teaching semester
Approved compulsory requirements are valid for the two following semesters.
Forms of Assessment
3 hour written examination
The exam assignment will be given in the language of instruction in the course.
The exam answer must be submitted in the same language as the exam assignment.

A retake exam is arranged for students with valid absence according to ยง 5-5. If there is a retake exam, this will be available for students with the follow results/absences:
- Medical certificate/valid absence
- Interruption during the exam
- Fail/failed
