Course description
Objectives and Content
Aims:
The aims of the course are to train health professionals to use and understand ultrasonography in a primary health care setting. Develop competent practical skills in the use of ultrasound for identifying accurate upper limb and lower limb human adult anatomy, and for specific interpretation and reporting of the normal state.
Content:
- Provide the student with a current, scientific evidence based approach to understanding the physics and instrumentation of ultrasound.
- Normal anatomy of the upper and lower limb musculoskeletal anatomy.
- Correct use of the ultrasound apparatus and to understand scans in two and three dimensional views.
- Introduction to of accepted algorithms for demonstrating musculoskeletal anatomy.
Learning Outcomes
Learning outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course unit, students should be able to:
Knowledge
- To critically reflect on current literature and principles of ultrasonography to assist in interpreting theoretical musculoskeletal pathology.
- To demonstrate a detailed anatomical knowledge of the normal human upper and lower extremities to assist in interpretation of ultrasound imaging.
Skills
To create hypotheses from normal ultrasound images from a musculoskeletal perspective of the upper and lower extremity of healthy adults.
- To generate high quality ultrasound imaging of normal upper and lower extremity healthy adults as a resource for theorising clinical intervention and diagnosis of musculoskeletal pathology.
General competency
- To reflect on observations of the normal in order to assist in formulating hypotheses for clinical intervention and diagnosis.
