Course description
Objectives and Content
Lectures, literature reading, self-study of cases using the virtual microscope through the online platform Aiforia, group discussions of clinical cases, excercises, evaluations.
Goal
The course will equip students with a systematic understanding of oral diseases, why and when it is important to take a biopsy, basic principles of diagnostics in oral pathology.
Content
The course covers the most common diseases of oral mucosa, salivary glands and jaws.
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge
- Have knowledge about the oral diseases that require a biopsy
- Have knowledge about the histopathology of most common oral diseases
Skills
- Be able to decide if a biopsy is necessary
- Be able to able to describe the microscopical characteristics of tissue sections from oral mucosa, salivary glands and jaws
- Be able to integrate the histopathological description in the final di-agnosis and decision of the treatment
General qualifications
- The student has knowledge of indications for taking a biopsy
- The student is able to interpret a histopathological description and integrate it in the final diagnosis and treatment of the patient
ECTS Credits
4 ECTS
The course requires approx 100h of study, 75h dedicated for structured teaching (video lectures, disucssions, microscopy) and 20-25h of self study of literature and microscopy. There will be 10 days full time study - a combination of 7 days with video lectures in the mornings and online.

Pass/fail
The candidates need to pass a written home exam. The home exam will consist in cases with clinical history and microscopic slides uploaded in Aiforia that the students have to evaluate, write a description of the microscopical findings and propose a specific diagnostic.
