Course description
Objectives and Content
This course covers special topics within the non-linear acoustics. This includes the theoretical basis (Burgers equation), parabolic approximation (KZK-equation) and 3-dimensional model (Westervelts approximation), and applications of non-linear methods and technology within the underwater acoustics and medical ultrasound, such as for example, harmonic imaging, non-linear damping, shock waves, cavitation, and parametric antennas.
Learning Outcomes
An understanding of basic non-linear methods and issues that are relevant in practical applications of acoustics.
By completing the course the student will be able to
- Explain the key concepts, laws and explanatory models within the non-linear acoustics,
- Explain the basic physical principles behind the generation and propagation of non-linear acoustic waves,
- Use basic laws and relationships to solve relatively simple problems within the non-linear acoustics.
The course will be used as a special curriculum or combination of subjects for master degree and PhD degree, and is adapted to content-related in each case.
