Course description

Objectives and Content

Objectives: The course will provide knowledge of and insight into various theories and methods used in research within the subject of history and relate these to a Latin American context.

Content: What history is in a Latin American perspective and how this has been interpreted from different theoretical standpoints in different historical periods will be discussed. Students will also be introduced to a number of methods used in Latin American history research as well as various types of source material and shown how these can be used to shed light on various issues in a research dealing with Latin American history and culture.

  • has insight into different methods and different types of source material used in research dealing with Latin American history and culture, and how such research can be structured
  • has insight into how the subject of history has been understood and practiced in a Latin American context.

  • has the ability to reflect on theoretical approaches, and assess the relationship between questions and choice of method in research that deals with Latin American history and culture.

No formal requirements, but all lecturing will be conducted in Spanish and requires a solid command of the language.

Access to the Course
The course is open to students enrolled in the Master's Programme in Spanish language and Latin-American Studies at the University of Bergen.
Teaching and learning methods

The form of teaching is seminars/lectures totaling 24 hours, two hours per week for 12 weeks or as block teaching, where it is a prerequisite that the students participate actively throughout the semester.

If fewer than five students register for a course, the teaching offer can be adapted to the number of students.

Forms of Assessment
The form of assessment is a five-day home examination where the students write a paper of ca. 3,500 words.
Grading Scale
The grading scale A-F is used, where F is a failing grade.
Assessment Semester

Autumn.

The exam will also be held in the beginning of the spring semester.

Reading List

Ca. 550 pages taken from textbooks and articles about historical theory and methodology used in historical investigation.

The reading list will be ready by July 1 for the autumn semester.

Evaluation of the course is carried out in accordance with the University of Bergen Quality System for Education.
