Bergen Network for Women in Philosophy (BNWP)

BNWP is a network at the Department of Philosophy and First Semester Studies that aims to support the work of women and gender diverse people in philosophy at the University of Bergen.

Who we are

The Bergen Network for Women in Philosophy (BNWP) was established in 2009. The network works to support the work of women and gender diverse people in philosophy at the University of Bergen.

We aim to:

  • Foster an inclusive climate for women and gender diverse people in the department of philosophy and the discipline more broadly
  • Provide support, mentorship, and community to women and gender diverse people working on any philosophical topic or within any philosophical tradition
  • Empower women and gender diverse people to continue their academic careers in philosophy
  • Provide opportunities for women and gender diverse philosophers to disseminate their research

What we do

BNWP runs several activities throughout the year:

  • Lunch meetings, where members meet for academic and social exchange.
  • Seminars, where women and gender diverse philosophers present their work. The seminars are open for everyone to attend.
  • Workshops and conferences for women and gender diverse philosophers.

Depending on funding, BNWP may also award financial support to members for academic development work.

How the network is organized

The network has statutes, a leadership and members who confirm their membership each year.

Leadership

The network is led by a leader or a leadership group elected for two years. At least one leader holds a permanent academic position at the Department of Philosophy. In a leadership group, the other members may be temporary staff, PhD candidates or master's students.

Membership

Membership can be held by women and gender diverse people who are students in a UiB philosophy program at any level (BA or MA), or are temporarily or permanently employed at the UiB philosophy department in any capacity, inclusive of PhDs.

At the discretion of network leadership, membership can also be extended to women and gender diverse people who are students or temporary/permanent employees at any other UiB organ.

Those who no longer have an affiliation with UiB are entitled to membership benefits for one year post-employment or -enrollment. Former members are welcome and encouraged to continue attending events hosted by the network unless otherwise specified.

Statutes

The current statutes were adopted at the annual network meeting in 2026.
