About us

The Faculty was first established on 15 August 1946. On 1 January 2008, it merged with the Faculty of Dentistry, with the aim of integrating oral health more closely with medicine. The merger was also intended to enable broader interdisciplinary education and research.

In addition to medicine and dentistry, the Faculty offers professional study programmes in pharmacy and dental hygiene, a bachelor's programme in nutrition, and several master's programmes in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, dental hygiene, nutrition, and other master's programmes in health sciences, biomedicine, global health, and nutrition (external link).

Research and departments

The Faculty covers a broad range of research fields. We host a Norwegian Centre of Excellence (SFF): Bergen Centre for Ethics and Priority Setting (BCEPS); a Centre for Research-based Innovation (SFI): Innovation Center for Neuroresilience (ICoN); three K. G. Jebsen Centres for Medical Research (external link) on Parkinson's disease, myeloid leukaemia, and epimutations in cancer; and several ERC projects. The Faculty's research infrastructure is organised across multiple core facilities.

Strategy plan for innovation

At the Faculty of Medicine, we have expertise and research with strong potential to improve patients' lives and health, and we therefore have a responsibility to translate this into products and solutions that benefit society and patients. Our goal is for our research results to lead to medical applications in diagnostics, treatment, and services that create added value for end users.

Strategy plan for education

We aim to recruit motivated students with broad and varied backgrounds. Our study programmes should offer an inclusive learning environment that fosters trust, collaboration, active participation, curiosity, critical thinking, adaptability, and innovation. We will use modern, research-based pedagogy to provide up-to-date and quality-assured teaching and practice, with a focus on learning, mastery, and competence. Candidates should be able to understand, critically apply, and contribute to the further development of modern knowledge and technology — including artificial intelligence — both during their studies and in their later careers.

Strategy plan for research training

The Faculty of Medicine educates independent, curious, and critically thinking doctoral candidates who conduct high-quality research that advances science and society. This is to be achieved through a focus on recruitment, research quality, academic development, career development, mobility, and the practical application of research results to address societal challenges.

Through the following vision and priority areas, research training at the Faculty of Medicine will achieve its strategic goals. To realise this vision, close collaboration with the health authority and other regional and national partners is essential.

Strategy plan for research

Research activity at the Faculty of Medicine should be of high quality and ethical standard, and communicated widely to peers and to society at large.

We aim to be visible at the international research frontier, and to contribute to the renewal of the knowledge base on disease understanding, prevention, diagnostics, and treatment, with the goal of better health and living conditions for people across the world.

Strategy plan for health, safety and environment (HSE)

Health, safety, and environment (HSE) work at the Faculty of Medicine should be a priority and a systematic task for managers and staff at all levels of the organisation. The Faculty should have strong HSE expertise and clear organisation of HSE work. The purpose is to promote health and well-being and to prevent accidents and harm to staff, students, the environment, and equipment.

The HSE strategy plan at the Faculty of Medicine is anchored in UiB's strategy and HSE action plan, and covers five HSE goals:

  • A good working community
  • Strong risk management and emergency preparedness
  • Safe and functional workplaces
  • Good handling of HSE non-conformities
  • Responsibility for the external environment

At the Faculty of Medicine, both the physical and the psychosocial working environment should be good. A well-functioning, inclusive, and diverse working community is about how different people work together in shared interest. The Faculty should be an attractive workplace that supports all staff in different phases of their careers and lives.

Strategy plan for research infrastructure

The research infrastructure at the Faculty of Medicine should be of high quality and contribute to outstanding research and innovation.

It should also help position the Faculty and attract strong staff and partners, and should be a natural part of the teaching in our study programmes. The Faculty of Medicine has a committee for core facilities that serves as an advisory body to the Faculty and department leadership on matters concerning core facilities and other major infrastructure. The management and operation of core facilities follow established principles.
