The department in numbers
The Department of Clinical Dentistry has about 270 staff members and around 30 active PhD candidates. Teaching is integrated with clinical training at the Odontologen patient clinic.
History
Dental education at the University of Bergen (UiB) dates back to 1962. The Department of Clinical Dentistry was established in its current form in 2008, as part of the reorganization of the Faculty of Medicine. Odontologen provides patient treatment carried out by students under expert supervision, and is a key part of both teaching and research.
Research
Research at the department is organized through the Centre for Translational Oral Research (TOR). The centre links laboratory work with patient-based research, and develops new knowledge about oral health, how damaged tissue can be rebuilt, and how oral conditions connect to general health. TOR consists of four research groups and three units.
The department has close ties to Odontologen, where research and teaching take place side by side. This creates strong conditions for turning research into better patient treatment.
Education
The department trains dentists and dental hygienists at the University of Bergen. We also offer qualification programmes for dentists trained abroad, specialist training, and doctoral education. You get practical clinical training from early in your studies at the Odontologen patient clinic, and combine biology, medicine and dentistry in a strong academic community.
