What can you study at IKO?
The Department of Clinical Dentistry offers two basic degree programmes in Norway, a qualification programme for dentists trained abroad, specialist training, and doctoral education.
Integrated Master's in Dentistry
A five-year professional study programme that qualifies you as a dentist. You alternate between basic subjects, clinical subjects and patient treatment, and treat your own patients under supervision from the fourth year onwards.
Bachelor's in Dental Hygiene
A three-year programme training you as a dental hygienist. The programme emphasizes health promotion and preventive dental care, and you meet patients at the department's clinics from the first year.
Specialist training in dentistry
Three- to five-year specializations for licensed dentists, including endodontics, oral and maxillofacial radiology, orthodontics, oral surgery and oral medicine, paediatric dentistry, periodontics, and prosthodontics and occlusion.
The qualification programme
For dentists trained outside the EU and EEA who need Norwegian authorization. The programme qualifies you to apply for authorization from the Norwegian Directorate of Health.
Doctoral education (PhD) and continuing education
The PhD programme is run by the Faculty of Medicine. IKO has its own research groups and runs BEST — Bergen Centre for Continuing Dental Education — with courses, hands-on workshops and live demonstrations for dental staff across Norway.
Academic community and learning environment
The Department of Clinical Dentistry and «Odontologen» in Årstadveien 19 are part of Alrek Health Cluster, where UiB, the Municipality of Bergen, Helse Bergen, the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health collaborate. You study alongside students of medicine and other health sciences.
Clinical training from early in your studies
As a student you use the department's own patient clinics as your learning arena. You meet patients under close supervision from experienced clinicians, and can work your way from preventive care and simpler procedures to more complex treatments through your studies.
The Skills Centre and facilities
Before you treat patients, you train at the Skills Centre with simulators and phantom-head equipment. The programme combines this training with modern clinical equipment, X-ray facilities and digital workflows that you find in a modern dental practice.
Subject areas and research
The Department of Clinical Dentistry has a research environment at a high international level in oral microbiology, biomaterials, clinical dentistry, social dentistry and oral health. As a student you can connect with ongoing research through project work and Master's theses.
Interprofessional collaborative learning
Through TVEPS — the Centre for Interprofessional Workplace Learning — you train interprofessional collaboration with students of medicine, pharmacy, nutrition, nursing, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. This prepares you for the interprofessional health collaboration you meet in practice.
Work clothing requirements
Odontologen at UiB follows the «Professional recommendations for infection control in clinical dental practice», developed by the universities of Oslo, Tromsø and Bergen in cooperation with the Decontamination Competence Centre at Oslo University Hospital, the Norwegian Dental Association (NTF), the Norwegian Directorate of Health, and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.
