About research at the Department of Clinical Medicine (K1)
The Department of Clinical Medicine (K1) carries out research on diseases of the brain, kidneys, nutrition and cancer, with a close link between laboratory research, patient care and health registries. The research is research-based, clinically relevant, and developed in close collaboration with the hospital trusts in Western Norway and international partners.
Our research
K1 is a broad research environment with activity in clinical, translational and health-related research. Research covers a wide range of medical fields and is closely linked to patient care at Haukeland University Hospital and other hospital trusts in Western Norway.
Research structure
K1 takes part in several leading research centres and interdisciplinary initiatives. Research groups are based in university and hospital buildings on the Haukeland campus, and the department also has activities in Stavanger, Haugesund and Førde.

The Animal Facility
The Animal Facility at K1 is a core facility that supports the responsible and ethical use of laboratory animals. It offers modern infrastructure, academic guidance and operational support for planning and carrying out animal studies, in line with current regulations and best practice.

PhD education
PhD education is a key area at the Department of Clinical Medicine (K1). The department has an active PhD community with around 140 candidates from different academic backgrounds, and works systematically with recruitment, completion and quality in doctoral education.
PhD candidates at K1 take part in strong, collaborative research environments that support scientific thinking, critical analysis and academic development. The department offers close follow-up throughout the PhD period, including a required midway evaluation.
K1 also invests in early researcher recruitment through the Medical Student Research Programme (Forskerlinjen) in medicine and dentistry, and offers a wide range of research courses and research schools.

Research schools
K1 is affiliated with and runs several research schools that give PhD candidates access to specialist courses, academic supervision and strong research networks.
Publications
K1 has a high and stable publication output and is one of the leading research environments at the University of Bergen (UiB). The broad research portfolio creates strong opportunities to work on current questions across medical fields.
