Studying at the Department of Clinical Medicine (K1)

At the Department of Clinical Medicine (K1), teaching is closely integrated with clinical practice and medical research. The department has a particular responsibility for the professional programme in medicine, with teaching that spans from basic clinical skills to advanced patient care and specialised knowledge. The department also leads the nutrition programmes at the University of Bergen.

Teaching is research-based and linked to the department's academic fields. It is offered to student groups at different levels of their studies. Several courses are also offered to students from other study programmes where this is academically relevant.

The department offers teaching and supervision at PhD level, and contributes to doctoral education through its own courses and the supervision of PhD candidates.

Nutrition 

The Department of Clinical Medicine (K1) runs the bachelor's and master's programmes in nutrition at the University of Bergen. The bachelor's programme gives a foundation in nutrition science and human nutrition. The master's programme in clinical nutrition qualifies you to work as a clinical nutritionist, with specialisation in the nutritional treatment of disease.

The Centre for Nutrition at UiB is affiliated with the department and is a leading national academic environment in nutrition research and outreach.

Medicine

The department has a significant teaching role in the professional programme in medicine. Academic staff contribute throughout the programme, particularly in core clinical fields.

The Department of Clinical Medicine (K1) also takes part in Vestlandslegen, the decentralised medical education where parts of the programme are taught at hospitals in Stavanger, Haugesund and Førde.

Dentistry and dental hygiene

Staff at the department teach pathology to students in dentistry and dental hygiene, contributing to a solid academic foundation in disease mechanisms.

Academic community and learning environment

The Department of Clinical Medicine (K1) is located in the Laboratory Building at Haukeland University Hospital, one of Norway's largest university hospitals. This places teaching close to clinical practice and to research linked directly to patient care.

Teaching takes place in close collaboration with the hospital trusts in Western Norway. The department's teachers are active in clinical work in the region.

The study offerings are run by the shared student administration of K1 and K2, in collaboration with the academic communities and the department leadership.
