About the department
The Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care conducts research and teaching in global health, general practice, epidemiology and the health sciences. The department contributes to the professional degree programme in medicine, several master's programmes and doctoral education.
Activities encompass research, education and public engagement in collaboration with health services and international partners. Work ranges from prevention and treatment to analyses of health and living conditions in the population.
History of the department
The Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care has developed through the merger of several academic environments at the University of Bergen. Fields within general practice, community medicine and global health form the basis for the current organisational structure.
The general practice academic community was established in 1972 and was later incorporated into the department of community medicine. The Centre for International Health was established in 1988 and became part of the department in 2013.
The department is now based at Alrek Health Cluster, where several of the academic communities are co-located. This development has produced a broad academic profile in research and education.
Subject areas at IGS
The department is organised into several subject areas covering key aspects of global health and community medicine. These include epidemiology and medical statistics, general practice, health sciences, ethics and health economics, as well as subjects related to ageing, medicines use and interprofessional collaborative learning.
The subject areas bring together research and teaching in areas including physiotherapy, nursing, genetic counselling and community pharmacy. Work spans prevention and health services to analysis of disease, health and living conditions in the population.
In addition, the Centre for International Health is a central part of the department's academic activities in global health.
