The amount of information about illness, health and the body grows every day. By studying a health subject, you can help ensure that as many people as possible receive the right information and treatment — whether it concerns teeth, food, medicine, mental health or exercise.
Most of our programmes qualify you for professional authorisation — a requirement for certain occupations such as pharmacist, physician, clinical nutritionist or dental hygienist. We also offer programmes that give you a strong foundation for medical research and different perspectives on health-related issues.
Career paths with a degree from the Faculty of Medicine
Nutrition
A Bachelor's degree in Nutrition opens the door to many career paths. You can work with product development, quality assurance and regulation in the food industry, contribute to public health projects, and work at health centres and information offices. You can teach and share knowledge, or work with communication and create content for the media and social channels. To work directly with patients, you need a Master's degree in Clinical Nutrition.
With a Master's degree in Clinical Nutrition and authorisation as a clinical nutritionist, you have many career options. For example, you can work:
- with patients in hospitals, both inpatient and outpatient
- in the municipal health service — with patients, on project work, or by implementing and managing the overall nutrition work in the municipality
- at the Norwegian Directorate of Health or other health authorities
- in the food industry or at information offices, with product development and communication
- with sports nutrition (for example at Olympiatoppen)
- as self-employed at a private health clinic or online
Pharmacy
A Master's degree in Pharmacy gives you many career opportunities and qualifies you for authorisation as a pharmacist.
Pharmacists work in pharmacies, in industry and in the public sector, including with:
- development, production, quality control and sale of medicines
- research
- advisory services
- teaching
- managing pharmacies (chief pharmacist)
- approval of new medicines
The pharmacy sector is constantly evolving and needs pharmacists. Hospitals and nursing homes need pharmacists to ensure safe medication treatment. In hospital pharmacies, you can work with production, supply of medicines and advisory services.
Medicine
The medical programme qualifies you for authorisation as a physician and for entry-level positions (LIS — "physician in specialist training") in the public health service. After your studies, you can specialise in a wide range of fields. Specialist training after the programme is coordinated by the Norwegian Directorate of Health. While you are in specialist training, you are also in paid work.
Physicians are also in demand in public administration and the private sector. As a physician, you can work in hospitals, as a general practitioner in primary health care, or in other roles that require medical expertise.
Dental hygiene
A completed Bachelor's degree qualifies you for authorisation as a dental hygienist from the Norwegian Directorate of Health. The authorisation confirms that you have completed an officially recognised dental hygiene programme.
The job market for dental hygienists is strong. You enter a profession that offers a wide range of challenges and regular working hours.
The dental hygienist is often the first person the patient meets at the dental clinic. Dental hygienists work in schools, health centres and other care institutions. As an authorised dental hygienist, you can also set up your own dental clinic.
Dentistry
The job market for dentists is strong. You enter a profession rich in challenges and play an important role in society. A completed programme qualifies you for authorisation as a dentist from the Norwegian Directorate of Health. The authorisation confirms an officially recognised dental programme — a requirement to work as a dentist.
The profession is flexible, and you work closely with all kinds of people. You can work in the public dental health service or in private dental practice. Some dentists work in teaching, administration or research. You can also own and run a private dental practice.
As a qualified dentist, you can apply for further specialist training in dentistry. The specialist training leads to official specialist approval as a dentist in your chosen field. There is a need for specialists in dentistry in both the private and public sectors.
Other relevant career paths include:
- research fellow positions and PhD training
- senior dentist positions at the Department of Clinical Dentistry (IKO)
- clinical supervisor positions linked to the specialist training at IKO
- consultancy work in professional associations or in the private pharmaceutical industry
- course leader for different actors in the field
Health and Society
Through the Master's programme, you receive thorough research training and gain broad expertise on major health challenges. The training provides a strong platform for working with complex health issues — in research, in professional development or in clinical practice.
Relevant jobs include research and teaching in higher education, public health work in municipal, county and state sectors, work as a psychosocial advisor in occupational health services, specialist physiotherapist in hospitals, and professional advisor or research assistant in the dental health service.
Biomedical Sciences
A Master's degree in Biomedical Sciences qualifies you for:
- scientific research and other academic positions
- technical positions in research laboratories (senior engineer)
- lecturer in the education sector
- administrative consultant — public and private organisations
- HSE consultant
- research communicator
Global Health
Candidates with an interdisciplinary Master's degree in Global Health qualify for positions in academia, the health sector, international organisations and public administration.

Manual Therapy
After completing the programme, you are qualified to work as a primary contact for patients with musculoskeletal complaints.

The programme also provides a basis for further research and PhD studies, both nationally and internationally. The programme is approved by the International Federation for Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy (IFOMPT) and qualifies you to work as a manual therapist internationally.
