About us

The Faculty of Psychology at the University of Bergen grew from a small psychology programme launched in 1969 to a broad academic community offering study programmes in psychology, education, and health sciences.

Our history

The psychology community in Bergen was established in 1964 with the founding of the Department of Psychology. The discipline had already gained a foothold at the University of Bergen through teaching in introductory philosophy courses and the University's first doctoral degree in psychology, awarded in 1961.

The professional psychology programme was launched in 1969 with an inaugural cohort of 12 students. Under the leadership of Professor Bjørn Christiansen, the programme was built around a broad vision of psychology, encompassing clinical psychology, educational psychology, community psychology, and work and organisational psychology.

A key step in the development of the programme came in 1972, when clinical training units for children and adults were established to provide students with practical experience. These services later evolved into today's Psychology Clinic, which continues to combine education, clinical practice, and research.

As the academic community expanded, the Faculty of Psychology was established on 1 January 1980. What began as a small psychology department developed into a multidisciplinary faculty with expertise spanning psychology, education, health promotion, and learning sciences.

Over the following decades, the Faculty broadened both its educational offerings and its research portfolio. New programmes in teacher education, health promotion, and university pedagogy were introduced, followed by bachelor's and master's degrees in several disciplines. The Faculty also strengthened its international research profile through the establishment of new research centres and strategic collaborations.

Today, the Faculty of Psychology is one of the leading academic environments in its field, bringing together education, research, and clinical practice across psychology, health, education, and society. Its work ranges from clinical and preventive interventions to innovative treatments and internationally recognised research.
