Land instruments used by Department of earth science

GEO hold a range of commercial and self-designed equipment specialized to equip a variety of geological field studies. These include for example speleology, soft sediment coring, geological mapping, sub surface profiling, seismic, section logging and sampling for exposure dating. Terrestrial field work at GEO are mainly connected to the research groups Quaternary Earth Systems and Basin and Reservoir Studies.

GPR

Ground penetrating radar (GPR)

We have two types of GPR at EARTHLAB. The Malå GPR system has antennas of 200mHz, 100mHz (RTA), 50mHz (RTA) and 25mHz (RTA), and a Blue Systems Ice radar system with 20 mHz, 10 mHz, 5 mHz, and 2.5 mHz antennas for mapping glacier thickness and englacial ice structures. The ice radar can both be used on skies, snowmobile or by helicopter.

HTH - gravity corer

The HTH gravity corer is a small (7 kg) hand operated gravity corer typically used to extract 30-50 cm long sediment cores of the water-sediment interface.

Uwitec Piston corer

The Uwitec piston corer with re-entry system enables long sediment cores at water depths up to 140 m. The coring system is operated from a raft using electrically powered winches. The corer itself consist of 2 m long 90 mm PVC liners in a stainless steel liner, and the stationary piston system makes the operator able to retrieve contiguous 2 m sections. The corer has a rubber sleeve core catcher, and may be operated with up to 100 kg hammer weight. The Uwitec piston corer has been shown to successfully obtain up to 50 m long sediment cores.

Nesje Piston corer

The piston corer (Nesje-corer) is a versatile coring system that may be operated by hand, or by power winch, from lake/sea ice or raft. The corer uses 6m long (up to 12 m tubes have been successfully used) 100 mm PVC tubes with a stationary piston system hammered in to the sediments with a 30 kg weight.
