Research in physics and technology
The Department's research is organised into eleven research groups and supported by national and international collaborations, research centres and large-scale research infrastructure.
Our research groups
Research at the department combines fundamental scientific questions with practical applications in industry, healthcare, energy and environmental monitoring.
Acoustics
The Acoustics Group studies sound waves in gases, liquids and solid materials. Research contributes to a better understanding of wave propagation and its practical applications.
Energy and Process Technology
The Energy and Process Technology Group conducts research in close collaboration with industry and international research partners. The group's goal is to deliver research at a high international level while supporting long-term innovation in energy and process technology.
Medical Physics
The Medical Physics Group investigates the physical principles behind modern medical technology. Research in this field supports the development and use of advanced diagnostic and treatment methods in healthcare.
Microelectronics
The Microelectronics Group develops advanced instrumentation for major international research and technology projects. Applications include missions for the European Space Agency (ESA), experiments at CERN, medical technology and underwater instrumentation.
Measurement Technology and Instrumentation
This group develops sensor and instrumentation technology for research and industry, particularly within energy and ocean technology.
Nanophysics
The Nanophysics Group is an experimental research group studying materials, structures and devices with one or more dimensions at the nanoscale.
Optics
The Optics Group studies light in the ocean and atmosphere. Research on how light is scattered, absorbed and reflected by particles helps improve marine observation, climate studies and satellite-based monitoring.
Reservoir Physics
The Reservoir Physics Group investigates multiphase flow in porous subsurface media. Applications include geological carbon storage (CCS), underground hydrogen storage (UHS), and oil and gas production.
Space Physics
The Space Physics Group conducts fundamental research on the interaction between Earth and near-Earth space. The group also contributes to atmospheric and climate science, high-energy astrophysics and geomagnetism.
Subatomic Physics
The Subatomic Physics Group is involved in experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Geneva, Switzerland.
Theoretical Physics
The Theoretical Physics Group advances the understanding of fundamental questions in physics through analytical and numerical calculations, simulations and modelling.
Research centres
SFI Smart Ocean
SFI Smart Ocean (external link)is a Centre for Research-based Innovation funded through the Research Council of Norway. The centre develops smart wireless underwater sensor networks for scientific and industrial applications.
Quantum UiB
UiB Quantum is the University of Bergen's centre for quantum technology. The centre brings together expertise in physics, informatics and mathematics to strengthen quantum technology research and development in Norway.
Research projects
Researchers at the Department contribute to projects including ALOFT, FracFlow and NOrCC.
