Gerhard Sulo
Position
Associate Professor
Research
I am a medical doctor by training, specialized in Cardiology and work as an associate professor at the Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care, Section for epidemiology and medical statistics (EPISTAT).
I have co-authored 79 scientific papers published in international peer-reviewed journals. My areas of interest include cardiovascular epidemiology, register-based studies, burden of disease (focus on non-communicable diseases), markers of inflamation and their relation to cardiovascular outcomes and social gradients in health.
I act as a referee for several scientific journals within cardiology (clinical and prevention) and journals on methods within register-based studies.
I have been very active in the Cardiovascular Disease in Norway (CVDNOR) project - the first project assessing the burden of cardiovascular diseases in Norway at the national level over a 20 years period. Through participation in the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study and in collaboration with other national and international colleagues I have contributed to both quality check of data delivered to the GBD and in writing annual reports and articles on the burden of disease and risk factors globally.
Through collaborations with colleagues from Bevital and Haukeland hospital, I have been involved in many projects focusing on inflamation markers and their prognostic role with regard to cardiovascular diseases.
Through collaboration with colleagues from various departments within The Norwegian Institute of Public Health, I have been involved in assessing the burden of trafic noise and air pollution in Norway and other Nordic countries. Further, through collaboration with GBD study, I have been involved in research focusing on projecting life expectancy in Norway.
From 2018 onward, I have been involved in multidisiplinary research with focus on oral health, its risk factors and how it relates to systemic conditions.
I have supervised 2 PhD candidates (fulfilled) and I am supervising 3 other candidates in their ongoing PhD projects.
Teaching
I teach Epidemiology to medicine and pharmacy students and PhD candidates and supervise 3 PhD candidates
I am the leader of the steering comittee for the first semester of medical studies at the Facultly of Medicine, University of Bergen, MEDOD1 and member of the steering group for the medical studies at the faculty of medicine, University of bergen, Programutvalget for medisinstudiet - PUM
