Greymatter reimagines the health ecosystem, positioning it within the very communities where people live. The project focuses on transforming facilities and launching innovative, generational initiatives aimed at creating inclusive, multigenerational neighborhoods and compassionate communities, thereby designing spaces that anticipate the needs of future generations.
Acknowledging that 80% of health factors lie outside of clinical treatment, Greymatter extends healthcare beyond traditional institutions, integrating services directly into neighborhoods to transform them into proactive hubs of health and prevention.
Addressing the need for increased care and community engagement across generations, Greymatter employs urban and architectural strategies to mitigate the health personnel shortage, reduce municipal health service costs, and address the increasing loneliness among seniors alongside disengagement among youth.
Recent initiatives by Greymatter include developing a health strategy for the new health-promoting neighborhood at Ytteren for Rana Municipality, implementing health principles in the transformation of the Old Veterinary School in Oslo for Linstow and Oslo Municipality, and collaborating extensively with Landsbyggfonden in Denmark. This work aims to integrate health into an innovative social and care infrastructure for the Danish social housing sector, impacting approximately 1.4 million residents.
The project facilitates connections among experts in health and urban development to foster innovative approaches to these challenges. Collaborators such as Aging and health, Verdidighetsenteret have been instrumental in the progress of cases Greymatter has tackled.
Greymatter is led by Jerome Picard, an associate professor at the University of Bergen and partner at Bergen-based architecture firm LOCAL. Greymatter leverages academic insights into Care and Culture through the Design faculty to push forward this agenda.
The project poses a reflective question: Where would you like to live when you grow old? This question underscores the project's commitment to reshaping environments for an aging society.
