Johann (Hans) Sagan is an Associate Professor of Design and the Master Program Coordinator at the Department of Design at the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design at the University of Bergen. He holds a Ph.D. in Architecture from the University of California – Berkeley, and degrees in communication studies and cultural studies from the University of North Carolina and the University of Minnesota.

His research critically investigates processes, theories, and ethics of design, particularly through social and economic contexts. He examines and uses design research, evidence-based design, design thinking, and integrative, interdisciplinary, holistic design processes to interrogate the built environment at a variety of scales, from the body-adjacent, to the spatial, to the urban.
