Grading scale before 2003

UiB changed its grading system in 2003. You will find an overview of the previous grading system on this page.

Numerical grading scale

Before 2003, the grading system was set according to the regulations for each faculty. The following scale was used by all faculties with the exception of the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry.

Grades from 1.0 to 6.0

The  numerical grading scale had grades from 1.0 to 6.0 in increments of 0.1.

1.0 was the best grade and 4.0 was the worst passing grade. The grade levels 4.1 - 6.0 were used as auxiliary variables in the grading work and were normally not reported.

The numerical grading scale could be used without additional terms and with additional terms in Latin or English.

Additional terms in Latin:

  • 1.0 - 1.5  Laudabilis prae ceteris
  • 1.6 - 2.5  Laudabilis
  • 2.6 - 3.2  Haud illaudabilis
  • 3.3 - 4.0  Non contemnendus
  • 4.1 - 6.0  Immaturus

Additional terms in English:

  • 1.0 - 1.5 Excellent
  • 1.6 - 2.5 Very Good
  • 2.6 - 3.2 Good
  • 3.3 - 4.0 Not recommendable but pass
  • 4.1 - 6.0 Fail

Letter grading scale

The letter grading scale had grades on the scale A, B, C, and D for pass and "Fail" for fail. A was the best grade and D was the worst passing grade.

Pass/Fail grading scale

  • Pass/Fail
  • Approved / Not approved
  • Passed with laud / Pass / Fail

Grading scales used at the Faculty of Law

The following grading scale was used:

  • 2.00 - 2.15  Laudabilis
  • 2.16 - 2.35  Passes with laudabilis
  • 2.36 - 2.55  Can get laudabilis
  • 2.56 - 2.75  Can probably get laudabilis
  • 2.76 - 2.95  Haud illaudabilis
  • 2.96 - 3.15  Passes with haud illaudabilis

Students who received a grade worse than "Passes with haud illaudabilis" had failed. No numerical grade was assigned to them.

For exams in professional studies, the following grading scale was used:

  • Laudabilis - three different grades
  • Haud illaudabilis - two different grades
  • Fail

No final grade was given.

Grading scale used at the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry

Before the fall of 2003, the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Bergen used the grading scale 6 – 12, where 6 was the lowest grade to pass and 12 was the highest achievable grade.

For each exam, a grade was given as a whole number from 12 to 6. Students who received a score lower than 6 had failed the exam. No numerical grade was assigned to them.

Partial and final grades were given as follows:

  • 11.00 - 12.00  Laudabilis cum litteris commendatitiis
  • 9.00 - 10.99    Laudabilis
  • 7.00 - 8.99      Haud illaudabilis
  • 6.00 - 6.99      Non contemnendus

The faculty itself provided rules for calculating final grades, partial grades, and grades in subjects where the grade was a combination of several grades.
