Get ready for your exam

To ensure you can complete your exam, you must prepare both your computer and yourself. There are technical requirements for your equipment, and academic and formal requirements for your exam submission. Additionally, you must be registered for the exam.

Why is it important to prepare for your exam?

If you forget something, it may prevent you from starting or completing your exam.

You won’t regain the time spent resolving issues, which means less time to answer exam questions.

Checklist for students before taking the exam

Check if you have registered for the exam in Studentweb

You must be registered for the exam in the course you are taking.

Studentweb shows your registration status, candidate number, exam date and duration, and any approved accommodations.

For home exams and exam submissions, the start and end times are listed in Studentweb.

For in-person exams, they start at 9:00 AM or 3:00 PM. Start times may change up to three days before the exam, so it’s crucial to verify your start time in Studentweb

Two weeks before an in-person exam, you’ll see your assigned exam location. Room assignments are provided three days before the exam.

Ensure you remember your UiB username and password

To take the exam, you must log in with your UiB username and password.

For exams in the exam system (Inspera), log in with Feide and select UiB as your affiliation. For exams in Mitt UiB, use your UiB account.

Check a few days before the exam that:

  • Your UiB account is active, and you remember your username and password (e.g., by logging into MittUiB or the exam system).
  • If you’ve forgotten your password, you can reset it on UiBtilgang.
  • If prompted to change your password, do so inmediately.
Check your computer before each exam

As a student, it’s your responsibility to ensure your computer functions during the exam.

For exams requiring a computer, follow these steps to avoid issues:

  • Install updates, don’t just download them.
  • Upgrade to the latest version of your operating system and browser, and test them before the exam.
Familiarise yourself with the exam system (Inspera)

The better you know the exam system (Inspera) beforehand, the more you can focus on the content of your exam answers. Spend some time exploring the demo tests available at vurdering.uib.no

Academic requirements for the exam

Your exam should demonstrate what you know and have learned in the course.

The exam submission must meet the requirements specified in the exam instructions, course description, and course page in Mitt UiB.

General requirements:

  • Solve the exam tasks independently.
  • Always cite sources if you’re inspired by or use others' work. Familiarize yourself with the rules on plagiarism and citation before the exam.

Each exam may have unique requirements, which can differ from what you’re used to from secondary school, or other courses, universities or colleges. Carefully review the rules for the specific exam you are about to take.

What else do you need to do or know before an in-person exam?

Before the exam, it is especially important that you follow the points below and make sure your computer and devices are in working order.

  • The exam is conducted in a secure browser, abbreviated SEB. This blocks access to resources on your computer and the internet during the exam. You are responsible for installing SEB on your computer BEFORE the exam day.
  • Before each new exam, you must ensure that you have the correct version of SEB.
  • Devices, such as your keyboard and mouse, must be wired. Since the computer is locked, you cannot use devices connected via Bluetooth.
  • Please test all your devices before the exam work properly in a demo exam using SEB at vurdering.uib.no.
Are you going to take an in-person exam in which you can write and draw on handout sheets?

In some courses, it is possible to submit hand-drawn sketches/illustrations or calculations to supplement the digital exam answer. The examiner will see the sketches along with your digital answer.

Below the text/writing field in Inspera, there is a unique code that you must fill in on the sheet. It is written on the back of the sheet how to fill in the code correctly. It is important that you do this as instructed so that we can link your sheets to your exam answers. Read more about written/drawn exam answers.

Technical support

IT assistants at BRITA can help with your computer or software needs.

Before an on-campus exam, they can assist with installing SEB.

During the exam, technical support is available. However, if the issues are due to a lack of preparation, you won’t regain lost time.

Exam questions

Information and contact details about the exam are available on the course page in Mitt UiB and the course description online.

For in-person exams, you can contact a course-specific representative at the start of the exam. In some cases, they may visit the exam location; in others, you must ask an invigilator to call them.

Private candidates

If you’re taking the exam as a private candidate, you must have a UiB account to log in and take the exam. Check the information in the letter you received from your faculty.

Participants in external courses arranged by UiB will receive login information from the organizer before the exam.

Computer system requirements

Your computer must:

  • Run Windows 10 or macOS 12.1 (or newer).
  • Have at least two installed browsers: Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or Apple Safari (for Mac). Use the two latest stable versions.
  • Support wireless networks.

Before an in-person exam:

  • Log in to Eduroam and learn how to connect to it. Eduroam is used in most exam locations. Network details will be provided if necessary.
  • Install the latest version of the Safe Exam Browser.
Downloading and testing the Safe Exam Browser

How to download SEB:

  • Log in to vurdering.uib.no
  • Under "Demo Tests," find "DEMO On-Campus Exam /..." and select "Click here to prepare."
  • Follow the instructions under "I don’t have Safe Exam Browser installed."

If you experience any issues:

  • Ensure your computer meets the system requirements.
  • You need admin rights to install SEB, which may make it difficult to use a work computer for exams.
  • UiB employees can install the Safe Exam Browser on their work computer from the Software Center.
How to check that you have the correct version of the Secure Exam Browser?

If SEB is already installed:

  • Log in to vurdering.uib.no
  • Under "Demo Tests," find "DEMO On-Campus Exam /..." and select "Click here to prepare."
  • Follow the instructions to test SEB and ensure it works properly.
  • If you can complete and "submit" the demo test in the week before the exam, and then exit the Safe Exam Browser without error messages, your computer is ready for the exam.
Computer problems and borrowing one for the exam

If you do not have a laptop (see the section on system requirements) to bring with you to an on-campus exam, you can apply to borrow a computer from UiB. Loaned computers with a secure browser will be provided in the exam venue before the exam begins.

To apply for a loaned computer for your exam, log in to the form below using your UiB username and password. Select which of your exams you would like to borrow a computer for. Remember to submit the application by clicking the "Send" button. At the top of the same form, you will see which exams you have been approved for a loaned computer.

Application form for borrowing a computer for on-campus exams

The application deadline is one week (5 business days) before the exam date to receive a loaned computer. If you need a loaned computer after the deadline has passed, you are generally expected to borrow one privately. If this proves challenging, you must immediately contact the Study Administration. Remember to include the course code and exam date in your communication. Contact the Division of Student and Academic Affairs.
