The Study Station: a guidance service in writing and study techniques

The Study Station is a support service in writing and study techniques for all undergraduate students at the University of Bergen (UiB).

When and where?

  • The service is open every Tuesday from 15:30 to 18:00.
  • You can find the writing mentors at the University of Bergen Library (Arts and Humanities) on the ground floor, in pods 1 and 2. You can also book a digital guidance session.

What can you get help with at the Study Station?

The Study Station can help you in these areas:

  • Writing techniques: You can get help with academic writing and tips on how to create good texts.

  • Study techniques: You can get help with how to best study, i.e. how to read, take notes and structure your daily routine as a student.

You can book, or drop in, for a 30-minute tutoring session with one of our two writing mentors. Choose whether you want tutoring in writing or study techniques.

What can writing mentors help you with?

Academic writing guidance

The writing mentors do not offer language editing or proofreading, but they will work with you to find ways to improve your text both linguistically and structurally, and help you develop your own writing skills.

You can get help with:

  • Assignment structure
  • Finding the red thread in your text
  • Use of academic literature in your text
  • Discussion and reflection
  • Defining a research question
  • Improving language (but not proofreading)

Study skills guidance

During these tutoring sessions, you can get tips on good study techniques, and together with your writing mentor, you can look at how you can better structure your study routine.

You can get help with:

  • Note-taking techniques
  • Reading techniques
  • Structuring your study routine
  • Learning strategies

How do you book a session?

We recommend booking in advance, as this will ensure you have a full 30-minute tutoring session. Drop-ins are only available if one of the writing mentors has not been booked beforehand (check the sign on the pod).

Important things to remember before booking a session:

  • Remember to book at least one hour in advance
  • You can choose a 30-minute tutoring session in either academic writing or study techniques.
  • You can book either a physical or a digital session.
  • If you cannot make it to the session, remember to cancel at least 1 hour in advance.

Feel free to send the text you want to work on in advance, at least one hour before your session, to studiestasjonen@uib.no.
