Forskning
Hammar er leder for forskergruppen Bergen Mood and Cognitive Function group (MCF) som har inkludert flere doktorgradskandidater hvor alle jobber med problemstillinger som omhandler alvorlig depresjon, kognitiv fungering og longitudinelle studier. Hammar er prosjektleder for samtlige studier og datainnsamlingen har foregått i tre store hovedstudier. Den første studien er en av litteraturenes lengste oppfølgingsstudier innenfor en pasientgruppe som er rammet av gjentagende depresjoner og denne kartlegger kognitiv fungering over en 10 års periode, og ser blant annet på sammenhengen mellom kognitiv svikt og dagliglivets fungering. Det andre hovedprosjektet er en longitudinell studie som inkluderte pasienter med gjentagende depresjon og kartla kognitive fungering med både eksperimentelle og standardiserte nevropsykologiske tester, cortisol målinger med deksamethasone og fMRI. Det tredje hovedprosjektet er et av de første på verdens basis som samler inn en pasientgruppe av førstegangs deprimerte pasienter og følger dem over tid. Også her samles inn data om kognitiv fungering, cortisol og emosjonelle informasjonsprosessering. Flere funne er generert fra disse datamaterialene og publisert i internasjonale journaler. Et nytt hovedprosjekt er i gang med å samle inn data fra pasienter som er symptomfrie fra depresjon og i remisjon. I tillegg er Hammar samarbeidspartner i diverse prosjekt som undersøker barn med autisme, pasienter med angst, bipolare pasienter som mottar ECT behandling, biologiske markører hos ungdommer som overlevet Utøya massakren.
