Jeg er en eksperimentell fysiker, spesialisert innen overflatevitenskap, med doktorgrad fra Cambridge University, Cavendish Laboratory. Min viktigste forskningsinteresse er utvikling av ny vitenskapelig instrumentering og nye metoder, ved hjelp av molekylære stråler.
Som postdoc ved TU-Graz koordinerte jeg et EU NEST-prosjekt om utvikling av et nytt mikroskop ved bruk av nøytrale heliumatomer som en bildesonde. I januar 2008 publiserte vi de første bildene. Dette førte til et nytt EU-prosjekt her i Bergen i 2013-2016. Forskningen fortsetter med det endelige målet å utvikle et nanoskala-nøytralt helium-stereomikroskop.
Forskergruppen min har også brukt molekylær strålediffraksjon for å karakterisere oksidoverflater. I 2015 oppdaget vi en av de største overflaterekonstruksjonene som noensinne er observert på et bulk-substrat på α-kvarts (0001). I 2021 var vi den første gruppen som målte den temperaturavhænginge bøyestivheten til et 2D-materiale. Dette blev gjort ved hjelp av uelastisk heliumatomspredning. Dette arbeide fortsætter i et FRIPRO projekt 2D Material Properties, finansieret af Forskningsrådet.
I 2019 publiserte jeg sammen med samarbeidspartnere en teoretisk artikkel som utvidet binær holografi til nærfeltet, og som viste hvordan dette kan brukes til å lage maskebasert litografi med 1 nm oppløsning ved bruk av metastabile heliumatomer. I 2020 har vi blitt finansiert av FET-OPEN for å realisere dette eksperimentelt. Jeg leder prosjektet.
Jeg har utvidet min interesse for vitenskapelig metodikk til å omfatte arkeometri. På dette feltet har jeg samarbeidet med konservatorer og arkeologer for å utvikle identifikasjonsmetoder for gamle plantefibre.
Jeg bruker også kunnskapen min om overflater i atomskala til å utvikle nye smarte overflater og -belegg. I 2019 publiserte gruppen min den første studien av grafenens isofobe egenskaper noensinne. Vi viste at fluorinert grafen gir langvarig ishemming av høy luftfuktighet. Dette arbeidet pågår i et M-ERA.NET-prosjekt, som jeg også koordinerer.
Undervisning
Jeg er interessert i undervisning og utvikling av nye undervisningsmetoder. De siste fem årene har jeg hatt ansvar for det grunnleggende fysikkurset i klassisk mekanikk, og jeg bruker kurset til å prøve ut nye undervisningsmetoder. Dette førte til en publikasjon om hvordan studentenes prestasjoner kan forbedres ved å inkludere "pugging" i forelesningene. Med støtte fra Universitetet har vi undersøgt hvordan Covid-19 lock down i 2020 påvirkede studenterne.
I mange år har jeg vært interessert i å støtte unge forskere, doktorgradsstudenter og postdoktorer. Jeg har holdt workshops om artikkelskriving og vitenskapelig publisering for flere hundre studenter ved forskjellige universiteter. Arbeidet resulterte i utgivelsen av boken "Scientific Paper Writing - A Survival Guide", illustrert av Jorge Cham fra PhD Comics.
