Forskning
Cecilie Svanes, MD PhD, er professor ved Senter for internasjonal helse, Universitet i Bergen. Les mer. Hun er både forsker og praktiserende lege. Hennes daglige kliniske liv inspirerer forskningen, og forskningen inspirerer hennes kliniske arbeid. Hun drives både av nysgjerrighet for menneskekroppens fysiologi, og av et behov for å bidra til bedre helse og forebygging av sykdom i større skala.
Doktorgradsarbeidet hennes ble en del av den etablerte kunnskapen om perforert magesår (hull på magesekken) og er referert til i lærebøker og litteraturkilder i kirurgi. Noen av forskningsresultatene fra dette arbeidet ledet henne inn i forskning om hvordan forhold tidlig i livet kunne påvirke helse og sykdom gjennom hele livet. Dette ble hennes fokus da hun gikk over til lungemedisin. I European Community Respiratory Health Study og den koblede Respiratory Health In Northern Europe-studien bygget hun opp og ledet forskningen på tidlig-liv opprinnelsen til voksnes luftveishelse og -sykdom.
Ny forståelse fra dyremodeller om epigenetisk overføring av eksponeringseffekter gjennom den mannlige linjen, var grunnlaget for at Svanes etablerte flergenerasjons studien RHINESSA (www.rhinessa.net). Hennes gruppe har bygget et verdensledende tverrfaglig miljø innen forskning om hvordan forhold i tidligere generasjoner, og særlig hos den kommende far, påvirker lungehelse og -sykdom i kommende generasjoner. For banebrytende arbeid på disse feltene mottok hun i 2023 den store æren av å bli utnevnt til Doctor Honoris Causa ved Uppsala universitet.
Cecilie Svanes sin vvisjon i dag er avklare hvordan miljøet og livsstilen til unge gutter og jenter påvirker helse og sykdom hos deres fremtidige barn og påfølgende generasjoner – med de fantastiske mulighetene for effektiv forbedring av folkehelsen som et slikt paradigme ville innebære.
