Forskning
Oppsummert handler forskningen min om samspillet mellom kognisjon og emosjoner, og bevissthetens rolle i dette samspillet. Jeg har et spesielt fokus på metakognisjon, «tenkning om tenkning». Jeg har også jobbet med metaemosjoner, «emosjoner om emosjoner». For tiden fokuserer jeg på disse spørsmålene hovedsaklig innenfor situasjoner av læring og lesing.
Metakognisjon og metaemosjoner i lesing og læring. Ett område av forskningen min utforsker metakognisjonens rolle i lesing og læring. Jeg utforsker disse spørsmålene teoretisk og i anvendte settinger. Jeg har for eksempel studert metakognisjon i konteksten av digitale vs. ikke-digitale lesekontekster, samt ulike fasetter av metakognisjon hos lesere med og uten dysleksi.
Implisitt vs. eksplisitt læring. I implisitt læring tilegner den lærende seg kunnskap gjennom passiv eksponering for en stor mengde stimuli, f.eks. bokstavrekker som er designet basert på en kunstig grammatikk. Jeg har studert forholdet mellom implisitt læring og metakognisjon, effekter av humør på implisitt vs. eksplisitt læring, og i hvilken grad implisitt lært kunnskap kan kontrolleres strategisk. Kontinuumet implisitt-eksplisitt er svært nyttig for å forstå hvordan mennesker tilegner seg kunnskap og ferdigheter i en rekke hverdagssituasjoner, som et resultat av intensjonell tilegnelse vs. passiv eksponering, f.eks. å lære fra faktatekster vs. fiksjon.
Fremtidstenkning og emosjoner. Jeg er interessert i kognitive og emosjonelle sider ved «mentale tidsreiser», inkludert selvfordelaktig optimisme, fremtidsplanlegging, og fremtidstekning ved suicidalitet.
