Ny bok i mai 2024: Metoder for å forstå mediebruk
Grunnleggende er jeg interessert i hva mediene betyr for demokratiet. I moderne demokratiske samfunn ser en for seg at mediene spiller en sentral rolle for at folket skal kunne styre: Ideen er at mediene utgjør en infrastruktur for offentligheten – altså kanaler og arenaer der informasjon om politikk kan spres og diskuteres, og der borgerne kan spille inn sine problemer til de som styrer. Jeg er interessert i hvor godt ideen om medienes rolle for demokratiet fungerer i praksis, til ulike tider, med ulike medieteknologier, og under ulike politiske regimer.
Sammen med Brita Ytre-Arne leder jeg Mediebruksgruppen ved instituttet. I 2022 ble jeg tildelt et ERC Consolidator-stipend for prosjektet "Distributed and prepared. A new theory of citizens’ public connection networks in the age of datafication (PREPARE)".
I doktoravhandlingen min studerte jeg hvordan ulike lands mediepolitikk la til rette for en slik rolle gjennom regulering av offentlige finansiert kringkastingsinstitusjoner som NRK og BBC i møte med internett. Et hovedfunn var at mediepolitikken ikke anerkjente nettets særpreg, og dermed holdt fast ved en forståelse av institusjonenes roller som radio- og tv-kringkastere, mens de i realiteten opererte som allmennmedier på tvers av plattformer.
Dette arbeidet videreførte jeg blant annet i analyser av europeisk medieregulering, og hvordan slike institusjoner tar i bruk sosiale medier som Facebook. Senere har jeg også, sammen med kollegaer ved instituttet og ved Universitetet i Oslo, studert hva som kjennetegner de nordiske mediesystemene mer generelt. Her har et hovedpoeng vært å vise hvordan det som ofte omtales som den nordiske velferdsmodellen ikke kan forstås uten at mediene regnes med.
Jeg har også tidligere vært opptatt av hvordan sosiale medier som Twitter tas i bruk for politisk debatt. I denne sammenheng har jeg sammen med Anders Olof Larsson jobbet med twitterbruk under valgkamper i både Norge, Sverige og Danmark. Dette arbeidet har også ledet til bidrag innen metodeutvikling og i diskusjonen om forskningsetikk på internett. Studiene har blant annet bekreftet antagelsen om at oppmerksomhet er ujevnt fordelt også i sosiale medier, og at det lønner seg å ha en posisjon offline for å bli hørt online.
Formidling
Jeg formidler fra forskningen gjennom foredrag, rapportskriving og ulike mediebidrag.
Funn fra de norske delene av Reuters Institute Digital News Report formidles på en egen nettside.
Jeg har tidligere vært medlem av Kringkastingsrådet. I 2015-2017 var jeg medlem av Mediemangfoldsutvalget. En kort artikkel om brukerperspektiv på mediemangfold finnes hos Vox Publica.

Undervisning
Jeg underviser om medier og demokrati, mediebruk, ny medieteknologi, mediepolitikk, medieinstitusjoner og mediehistorie.
Seneste masteremner: Critical perspectives on Big Data, Nyheitsbruk, nettmedia og demokrati: praktisk forskingsseminar, og Avansert mediebruksanalyse. Jeg underviser også emner for utvekslingsstudenter, og har hatt ansvar for introduksjonsemnet til medier og kommunikasjon.
