Forskning
Eg har forska på matematisk og numerisk modellering av strøymingsprosessar i porøse medium. Ei hovudinteresse har vore å forstå korleis vi kan skalere opp slike prosessar frå pore-skala (mikrometer) til kontinuums-skala (centimeter) og vidare til feltskala (kilometer). Spesielt har eg vore oppteken av prosessar på pore-skala som kan gi opphav til ikkje-likevekt effektar i lukkings-relasjonar («constitutive relationships») i kontinuums-skala modellar. Eg har også arbeidd med å forstå og utvikle Lagranske numeriske metodar for ikkje-lineære adveksjons dominerte transport prosessar.
Behovet for å utvikle praktiske løysingar som kan bidra til å utslepp av klima-gassar har dreia forskinga mi mot geologisk lagring av CO2-gass (som i CCS= Carbon Capture and Storage). Eg har leia og delteke i fleire større prosjekt som har studert modellering og simulering av lagring av CO2-gass i undersjøiske akviferar. Spesielt har vi sett på korleis vi kan modellere oppførselen til enorme mengder superkritisk CO2-gass som blir pumpa inn i slike undersjøiske reservoar fylt med saltvatn. Eit hovudmål har vore å utvikle effektive simuleringsmetodar som kan nyttast i risiko-vurdering av CO2-lagring. Dei siste åra har eg arbeidd med simuleringsteknologi som kan nyttast til å modellere effekten av CO2-lagring på regional skala som kan involvere mange injeksjons-lisensar.
I perioden 2005 til 2010 var eg nestleiar og fungerande instituttleiar ved Matematisk institutt. Frå 2010 til 2013 var eg visedekan for utdanning ved Det Matematisk-Naturvitskapelege Fakultet (no Fakultet for Naturvitskap og Teknologi), og frå 2013 til 2021 var eg dekan ved same fakultet. Etter å ha hatt tunge administrative verv har eg dei siste åra forsøkt å rehabilitere meg som utdannar og forskar.
Undervisning
Eg har lang erfaring som underviser og vegleiar ved Matematisk Institutt. Eg har undervist kurs på alle nivå ved instituttet og har hatt stort ansvar for innføringskursa i matematikk. Etter perioden som dekan har eg undervist Differensiallikningar (Mat 131) og Funksjonar av fleire variable (Mat 212).
Stort fråfall er eit problem i høgare utdanning. Det er mange grunnar til dette, men læringsforsking og erfaring frå sentre for framifrå utdanning (SFU) viser at vi har ei solid verktøykasse for å redusere fråfallet dersom vi er villige til å bruke den. Eit viktig mål er så klart å fjerne unødvendig fråfall, samstundes som studentane lærer meir.
Dei siste åra har eg henta idear frå "Team Based Learning" i undervisninga mi i matematikk for å betre gjennomføringa i desse kursa. Dette er gjennomført i samarbeid med SERC-senteret (Stem Education Resarch Centre) ved fakultet. Eg har også eksperimentert med vurderingsformer i undervisninga. Eg er overtydd om at korleis vi vurderer studentane er essensielt for læring.
