I work on late-medieval English and European literature, focusing especially on religious culture, book history and mysticism. I completed my doctorate at Oxford in 2021 and have since held research fellowships at Cambridge, before coming to Bergen for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship in October 2025. My first monograph is forthcoming in 2027 with Oxford University Press, and it reappraises the works of the Yorkshire hermit Richard Rolle, arguably the most popular English author during the Middle Ages. Where past scholars have often characterised him as an isolated eccentric, my book reinterprets him as a mainstream literary writer by contextualising his work among European traditions of medieval spiritual compendia, offering a fresh perspective on his writerly craft. My current project explores the popularisation of theological teachings through the Latin textbooks which medieval priests use to teach laypeople. In the future, I plan to explore how these enormously popular textbooks offer an unacknowledged vector by which literary traditions from across Europe and beyond reached popular audiences in medieval England. In a side project, my recent discoveries in a medieval manuscript received international media coverage.
