Mål og innhald

The objective of this course is to explore the foundations of health promotion theory, practice and research, originating in the WHO Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion related to Development. The general approach of all aspects of the health promotion specialisation is a resource-based perspective. Students are encouraged, through multiple learning methods, to develop an understanding of the conceptual, theoretical and philosophical frameworks that underpin health promotion. Research-based examples and applications will be used to relate Health Promotion principles and concepts to topical development issues.

On completion of this course the students should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge:

The student has:

  • In-depth understanding of the concepts, principles and charters of health promotion and how these relate to global development
  • A critical overview of "families" of theories relevant to health promotion in the context of global development
  • In-depth knowledge of the inter-relationships between one (or more) current global challenge(s) and health promotion
  • An overview of health governance in the context of global development

Skills:

The student will have the ability to

  • Evaluate relevant health promotion theories and apply appropriately in different global development contexts
  • Critically read and have in-depth discussions with peers on selected theoretical and empirical development-related health promotion texts
  • Work in an interdisciplinary group to synthesise knowledge on current global development issues and how they relate to health promotion

General competence:

By the end of the course the student has:

  • the ability to communicate in written work, oral presentations and through giving and receiving constructive feedback
  • the ability to take leadership positions in interdisciplinary group work

Open to all students registered in Master's Programme in Global Development in the Health Promotion track.

Maximum of five places open to master's students registered in other relevant programmes at UiB - must apply to and be approved by course leader before registration.

Arbeids- og undervisningsformer
The teaching methods will consist of lectures; applied and colloquium workshops; and student-led lectures.
Obligatorisk undervisningsaktivitet
  • Participation in the workshops (80% attendance), student-led lectures.
  • Report back (at least once) to plenary during a colloquium workshop.
  • All activities and assignments must be completed and approved before the student can write the home exam.

    Vurderingsformer

    Home exam (7 days) with two sections

    1. Section on health promotion charters and/or health promotion principles, concepts and action areas (1000 words)
    2. Section related to learning outcomes of course (2000 words)
