Course description

Objectives and Content

Objectives:

The course goal is to give an overview of the concepts of Information and Computer Security, with an emphasis on fundamental security properties, vulnerabilities, threats, and mechanisms for securing ICT systems.

Content:

Fundamentals:

  • Security properties, tools, and terminology
  • User Authentication, methods, and principles
  • Access Control, principles, and the role of access control

Computer Security:

In particular, malicious software: types, propagation, together with technical, organisational, and behavioural countermeasures.

Network Security:

In particular, the Internet, network-based attack, and an overview of countermeasures to network-based attacks.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the student must have the following learning outcome defined in knowledge, skills, and general competence:

Knowledge

The student can

  • describe fundamental security principles and practices
  • describe threats to digital systems and their potential damage

Skills

The student can

  • identify possible threats to a digital system
  • identify countermeasures to these threats

General competence

The student can participate in a conversation about security practices with other students

Teaching and learning methods
The teaching methods are organized as online teaching and digital learning resources.
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
Assessment in this course is carried out through compulsory quizzes and/or assignments on key topics. Compulsory quiz and activities are only valid for 1 semester (i.e. the teaching semester).
Forms of Assessment
The course is passed when all the obligatory work is completed and approved by the course instructor.

Assessment Semester
Examination only in the teaching semester.
Reading List
The reading list will be available within June 1st for the autumn semester and December 1st for the spring semester

The course will be evaluated by the students in a2024ccordance with the quality assurance system at UiB and the department
