Advanced Applied Seismic Analysis

Postgraduate course

Course description

Objectives and Content

Objectives:
Advanced Applied Seismic Analysis aims to give experience in use of advanced methods for seismic modelling, processing and imaging. Furthermore, it aims to give the student a deeper understanding of both advantages and disadvantages of the various methods, and make the student gain experience in presentation of scientific work.

Content:
The course applies principles from project based learning by exposing the student to two larger exercises that has to be solved, along as it is given continuous supervision in the necessary literature and software needed to solve the project work. The course is divided into 3 parts. The first part presents the basic principles for seismic modelling, processing and imaging in parallel to introducing the main software used throughout the course. Subsequently an exercise is given demonstrating seismic modelling by use of ray tracing, finite differences and other so called hydride methods. In the last part of the course a new exercise is introduced demonstrating various algorithms used in seismic processing and techniques for seismic migration. The results from the two projects are to be presented orally along guidelines used in scientific conferences. Each project including presentation has to be approved before permission for the final exam is given. The course is specifically relevant for students applying seismic methods in the research part of their master or PhD-work.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge
The student can

  • in detail explain the procedures applied in seismic modelling
  • in detail explain the procedures applied in a seismic processing workflow
  • explain the basic principles of various methods for seismic migration
  • evaluate which method for seismic modelling to be used based on the complexity of the geological model
  • evaluate the sequence of methods for seismic processing based on the assumed complexity of the geological formation
  • structure the results of project work and present these in a scientific format

Skills
The student can

  • perform seismic modelling
  • perform seismic processing
  • conclude project work and present these in a condensed form

General competence
The student has

  • gained knowledge of various advanced methods for seismic data analyses
  • experience in seismic modelling, processing and imaging
  • experience in project work and scientific presentation of results
  • demonstrated competence in scientific ethics and the ability to work independently and as part of a team

Semester of Instruction

Spring
Required Previous Knowledge
Basic principles in seismic reflection data and reservoir geophysics
Recommended Previous Knowledge
Signal theory, processing of seismic data, theoretical seismology
Access to the Course
Access to the course requires admission to a Master's Programme of study at The Faculty of Science and Technology.
Teaching and learning methods

Lectures, 1 hours/week

Supervised exercises, 3 hours/week

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
The students have to get approved two major project reports and oral presentations of these before permission for the final exam is given. The exam will to a large degree be based on student's reports of the two projects. The compulsory exercises are valid for a total of three semesters, including the semester they first were approved.
Forms of Assessment
The forms of assessment are:
Problem sets and oral presentations
Oral examination
Grading Scale
Passed / failed.
Assessment Semester
Assessment is only provided in semesters with teaching.
Reading List
The reading list will be available within July 1st for the autumn semester and December 1st for the spring semester.
