Course description
Objectives and Content
Learning Outcomes
A student who has completed the course should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.
Knowledge:
- Students will have a comprehensive understanding of how the political behavior and attitudes of young people are shaped, including factors that influence their political interest and participation.
- Students will be able to define and distinguish the different forms of political participation, including protesting, voting, joining political parties, and running for office, and the factors that influence them.
- Students will understand which factors condition the equal representation of younger and older generations' political interests and priorities.
- Students will develop a global perspective on the political behavior and attitudes of young people, and be able to compare and contrast the experiences of young people in different political systems and cultures.
Skills
- Students will be able to interpret patterns of political participation across electorates.
- Students will be able to differentiate between age-, period-, and cohort-effects in statistical models.
- Students will be able to understand and explain empirical evidence on political behavior, elections, and representation (raw data, graphs, regression outputs).
- Students will be able to design a research project that combines theoretical understanding and empirical analysis of youth and politics. This will include formulating a research question, identifying relevant data sources, and selecting appropriate research methods
General Competence
- Students will have an interdisciplinary understanding of social science theories on political behavior.
- Students will have the competence to understand and interpret empirical research results based on graphs, regression tables, and literature.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
Delivery of 1-page research design by mid-term is required to be admissible to take the final exam.
Approved compulsory requirements have no time limit.
Forms of Assessment
Students will have to pass a 4 hour school-exam by the end of the semester.
The exam will be given in the language in which the course is taught.
The exam can be submitted in English. It is also possible to submit in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.

Re-take exams are arranged for students with valid absence according to § 5-5 of the Study Regulations at UiB. If a retake exam are arranged for students with valid absence, students with the following results can also register:
- Interruption during the exam
- Fail/Not passed
If you qualify for the retake exam and a retake exam is arranged for students with valid absence, you can register yourself in Studentweb after January 15.
