Course description

Objectives and Content

The aim of the course is to give the student experience of scientific work methods by planning a scientific project, performing the work and presenting the results orally and in writing. The course will include an HSE-course and training in scientific presentation. The student will define a small theoretical or practical research project in cooperation with internal or external supervisors , perform the work and present the results orally to the research and student groups and in a written report.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course KJEM299 the student will be able to:

  • collect knowledge from the chemical literature
  • plan and complete a research project of limited scope
  • present scientific results orally and in writing

Access to the Course

The course is exclusively for students admitted to the Bachelor program in chemistry.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures: The teaching will be concentrated to specific periods.

Project work : 6 weeks (normally 2-3 students work together in a group, alternatively a student can work alone).

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

80 % attendance to the introduction part is required. Oral presentation of the project.

Mandatory attendance in the introduction part is valid for 2 following semesters.

Individual written report. Each student will be assessed individually. Participants in a group may get different grades based on the written report.

Grading Scale
The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
Course Evaluation
The students will evaluate the teaching according to the quality assurance system at UiB.
