Course description
Objectives and Content
Objectives: To teach the students how to use computers for solving problems in physics
Content:The course gives an introduction into computer science and on how to use the IT-resources available at the institute with the help of examples from ongoing research activities. LINUX is used as the development environment with C++ as the programming language; ROOT as a tool for data analysis will be introduced and basic methods of networking will be tested. The course is especially useful for students in subatomic physics.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge
The student
- understands basic concepts of computers
- can use the LINUX operating system and the shell
- understands intrinsic structures in physics data
- understands basic concepts of object-oriented programming
- can use ROOT
- can develop C++ programs
Skills
The student
- can solve computational problems using LINUX, ROOT and C++
