Objectives and Content

The course will contain at least four of the following components:

- Spanish language as an objective of study (introduction)

- Methodologies in Spanish dialectology

- Methodologies in Spanish sociolinguistics

- Language contact between Spanish and other languages

- Spanish language and culture

- New trends in Spanish linguistics

- Corpus linguistics

- Spoken language

- Pragmatics

- Text linguistics

- Discourse analysis

- Translation

Learning Outcomes

The student

  • is familiar with modern approaches in Spanish linguistics, and is familiar with the main characteristics of various methodologies and techniques used by linguists in the analysis of Spanish in recent times.
  • has gained insight into theoretical and methodological problems in Spanish linguistics.
  • can account for the main characteristics of modern methodologies of approaching Spanish language.
  • can distinguish between these methodologies and work with them.
  • has achieved a basis from which to continue to carry out research on Latin-American and European Spanish language.

Required Previous Knowledge
No formal requirements, but all lecturing is conducted in Spanish and demands a solid command of the language.
Recommended Previous Knowledge
Knowledge equivalent to a completed bachelor's degree in Spanish and Latin American studies.

Access to the Course
The course is open to students with admission to the master's program in Spanish and Latin American studies and students at the Foreign Language Teacher Education Programme with Spanish as their subject 1.
Teaching and learning methods

The form of teaching is seminar/lectures totaling 24 hours, two hours per week for 12 weeks or as block teaching, where it is a prerequisite that the students participated actively throughout the semester.

If fewer than five students register for a course, the teaching offer can be adapted to the number of students.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

A draft of the supervised assignment that is mentioned under "Form of Assessment" must be submitted for supervision by the announced deadline.

It is also compulsory for the students to meet once for supervision at the agreed time. The supervision can be held digitally. The deadline for submitting the draft will be announced at a seminar in the beginning of the semester.

Approval of compulsory work requirements applies in the teaching semester and the following semester.

Forms of Assessment
Students are to write a supervised term paper of ca. 4,000 words in Spanish plus bibliography. The topic for the term paper must be approved by the course instructor. The term paper will be assessed by a committee at the end of the semester.
Grading Scale
The grading scale A-F is used, where F is a failing grade.
Assessment Semester
Autumn. There is also assessment early in the spring semester for students with valid approval of compulsory work requirements.
Reading List
About 500 pages taken from various works in Spanish linguistics from approx. 1950 to the present day. The reading list will be ready by July 1 for the autumn semester.
Course Evaluation
The course will be evaluated in accordance with the quality assurance system of the University of Bergen.

Students have access to and may use examination support material since the exam assignment is written at home.
