Renewal of study permit

International students may need to apply for a renewal of their study permit during their stay in Norway.

Renewal of study permit 

The International Centre on behalf of the University of Bergen, is responsible for issuing study progress reports for renewal of residence permits. Reports are issued in accordance with UDI regulations.

 

Full-degree students

Full degree students
  • A satisfactory study progress of normally 60 credits for one academic year (30 credits per semester)  is required to renew the student residence permit.
  • The report must be ordered after the exams results are available.

How to apply:  

*Exemption: Reports ordered in the period between 10 July to 10 August 2025 will be issued after the 12 August 2025.

Delay in your studies
  • If  you are delayed in your studies, you must contact  your faculty in order to obtain a recommendation for an extension. This document must be attached to the study progress report, which you should also have ordered.
  • UiB will not recommend extension of work permits  if the student is delayed for more than one semester. It will be up to UDI to decide if the student can be granted a work permit extension.
  • Please note that a delay of more than one year that is not related to documented illness or maternity leave will not be approved by UDI.

How to apply:  

Admission to a second degree programme in Norway

Students admitted to a second study programme of higher academic level must submit a copy of their admission letter when applying for renewal of residence permit. Study progress report will not be issued for this purpose.

Please note:  

  • Students admitted to a new study programme at the same level  as their previous programme, will in general not be granted a renewal of their residence permit unless the new programme is considered deemed to be a continuation of previous studies.
  • A statement from your faculty/department will be required.
  • UDI will decide if the new admission can be considered to be a continuation of previous studies and if they can accept your application.
  • UDI will not renew a residence permit to start a second bachelor’s degree programme in Norway.

UDI rejection and appeal:

  • UDI’s decisions are based on their regulations. 
  • Applications for study permits are processed based on individual application and documentation.
  • Find necessary information on how to submit an appeal.
  • UiB cannot intervene with UDI's regulations, as we are not a participant in these cases.  If necessary, students can ask their faculty or department to issue a confirmation of support.
  • Processing time at UDI may take up to 12 months.
