Dominik Krell (the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law) explores recent developments in Saudi Arabian family law

In recent years, Saudi Arabia has attracted international attention for its efforts to reform Islamic law. While the controversial ban on female driving was lifted and cinemas finally opened, fundamental reforms of the law are still to come. 

 

By using family law as an example, the talk explores how legal change takes place in Saudi Arabia and what role the king and religious scholars play in the development of the law.
