Withdrawal or termination from the course

Withdrawal deadline

If you want to withdraw from a study place you already have accepted, the final deadline for doing so is normally 14 days before the course starts. Some courses might have an earlier withdrawal deadline, due to the need for planning the semester. 

The spesific date of deadline will be stated in the e-mail where we confirmed your admission to the course.

In cases where you are offered a study place only a few days before course start, you will still have the possibility to withdraw within 14 days, counting from the date of your acceptance of the study place.

Any withdrawing must be sent UiB by e-mail: videre@uib.no. You do not have to explain why you want to withdraw from the course. 

NOTE! After passing the given deadline for withdrawing, your registration is binding and you are obliged to pay the eventual study fee. This also apply, should you wih to terminate your studies at some later point. 

If you wish to withdraw within your given deadline, but after the course has actually started, we might demand that you pay a proportional share of an eventual study fee, to cover our costs. 

Withdrawing or terminating from welfare reasons

If any unexpected situation should occur after the deadline for withdrawal, related to health issues or other welfare reasons, you must contact us by mail as soon as possible: videre@uib.no

If you can justify why it will be impossible for you to continue studying and complete the course, we will consider to waive the tuition fee. If you are not able to justify and document any such reasons, you will still be obliged to pay the study fee, even if you wish to terminate the course. 

Should you wish to start over again at a later point, you must apply again and your application will be handled and considered as any other applicant. We do not grant deferred course start.

Study fee and invoicing

Some continuing education and part-time studies have tuition fees, while others do not. This will be indicated on the webpage for the specific study program.

The following applies to study programs with tuition fees:

Personal invoice 

Invoicing of study fees are handled by the Department of Financial Services at UiB. 

Invoice for courses with study fees will be sent out shortly after course start, with a 30 days payment deadline for international students and/or companies. 

Invoice is normally sent to each student personally, to the e-mail address registered when you applied for the course. 

If your employer have accepted to pay the study fee for you, you must pay the received invoice and get a refund from your employer. Only in special cases will it be possible to get the invoice sent directly to your employer. Please contact us to make such an arrangement: videre@uib.no.

The tuition fee is normally invoiced as an initial amount. You can ask to have this split into two instalments. If you want us to split the invoice, please contact us: videre@uib.no

Included in the study fee:

  • Teaching
  • Access to our learning platform Mitt UiB, with learning materials and other resources, for the semester (s) you have been accepted
  • Exam costs

Not included in the study fee*:

  • Curriculum literature
  • Expenses for travel and accommodation for studies with teaching at UiB campus in Bergen
  • Expenses for voluntary excursions/study tours etc. which is offered in connection with the course

Consequences of non-payment

The entire tuition fee must be paid within the deadline for withdrawal from final the exam. If the tuition fee has not been paid, you may be denied the right to take the exam or get assessed. 

Semester fee

All students who are accepted for a study place at UiB are obliged to pay a personal semester fee of NOK 650,- per semester. The semester fee are financing common benefits and services for all students at UiB.

Deadlines for payment

The general deadlines for semester fee payment is 1 September for autumn semester and 1 February for spring semester. Students enrolled in online studies and continuing education studies have other deadlines. Information about this will be given when you are accepted as student. 

Consequences of non-payment

If the semester fee has not been paid, you may be denied the right to take the exam or get assessed. 

Special needs

You can apply for special arrangements for teaching and exam or other forms of final assessment, if you have special needs related to illness, injury or disability. 

You must contact your course administrator as soon as possible after study start, to get guidance. Note that you will need to submit relevant documentation from a doctor, psychologist or another professional.

Pause or leave from study

We do not normally grant pauses during short studies like continuing education studies or online studies, unless you can document that you need leave for welfare reasons like own illness, illness or decease in close family relations or the like. Please contact your course administrator to get guidance of how to apply and what documentation we need.

You will in case be granted leave for one semester or max. two semesters, and will be able to re-enter when the course run again next time. Please be aware that we can not guarantee when- or if there will be a new course run.

Exam

You will automatically be registered for teaching and assessment/exam for the course in question, when we confirm your admittance to the course. You have the right to take the exam if you:

  • have had any mandatory work requirements/compulsory participation approved
  • have paid the semester fee
  • have paid the study fee (if the course have study fee)

Withdraw from the exam, sick or not passed

If you for any reason are unable to, or do not want to take the exam or other final assessment that you are registered for, the following rules apply: 

Withdraw from exam

Withdrawal deadline is normally 14 days before the exam date/start of exam period. The exact withdrawal deadline for your course will be stated in the formal course description. The withdrawal deadline will also be published on the course page in Mitt UiB. If you wish to withdraw from the exam, please contact the course administrator. 

Sick or otherwise validly absent during the exam

If you fall ill or have other valid reasons for missing the exam, after the deadline for withdrawing from the exam has expired or on the day of the exam, you must contact your course administrator as soon as possible and no later than 14 days after the exam date. You must send documentation from a doctor or similar to get a valid absence registration.

Three exam attempts and right to a new exam

All students normally have three (3) exam attempts.

Withdrawal from the exam within the deadline, or a valid and documented absence from the exam as described above will not count as one of your attempts. But if you do not withdraw from the exam in time, withdraw after the withdrawal deadline or interrupt during the exam, this will count as one attempt.

If you have a valid absence from the exam, or did not pass the exam, you have the right to be registered for a new exam. Such a continuation exam will be arranged by the institute as soon as possible, in many cases early/middle of the next semester, or together with new students in the next course.

Any continuation exam is included in the tuition fee, and will therefore not cost you anything, apart from the new semester fee.

However, if you have passed the exam with a valid result but wish to retake the exam to improve your result, we may charge you an exam fee to cover our extra costs.

Exam results, how to appeal, transcripts or diploma

Exam results within 3 weeks

The exam results will normally be published within 3 weeks, and you will be notified by e-mail when the results have been published. You must log into StudentWeb to view your results, they will not be sent to you. 

You are entitled to an academic justification of your grade. You can ask for an explanation via Studentweb within one (1) week after the exam results have been published.

How to appeal

If you wish to complain about a given grade, even after receiving an academic justification, you have the right to do so.

The deadline for complaining about grades is three (3) weeks after your grade has been published on Studentweb. If you have requested justification, the deadline is three (3) weeks after you have received the justification. You cannot complain about oral exam grades.

Grade transcripts or diploma

You can order your transcript of records with a digital signature on Studentweb.

UiB do not normally issues course certifications or diplomas for single continuing education courses. Such diplomas are only issued when a candidate has obtained a full bachelor` or master`s degree at UiB.
