Academic careers at UiB

As a researcher at UiB you can develop from PhD candidate to professor. The university holds the EU label HR Excellence in Research and supports your career throughout the whole path.

From PhD candidate to professor

An academic career at UiB usually follows these steps:

  • PhD candidate: you take a doctoral degree in a fixed-term position of three to four years.
  • Postdoctoral fellow: you develop your research further after the doctoral degree.
  • Associate professor: a permanent academic position with research and teaching.
  • Professor: the highest academic level, which you can apply to be promoted to.

Along the way you get access to world-class research infrastructure, supervision and an international research community.

HR Excellence in Research

The European Commission awarded UiB the HR Excellence in Research label in 2019. The label shows that we work systematically to improve research careers, based on the principles in The European Charter for Researchers.

For you as a researcher this means open and merit-based recruitment, good working conditions and clear support for career development.

Support early in your career
