How we process your application

After you have submitted an application to UiB, you may wonder what happens next. Here we explain the steps in the application process – from when you apply to when you receive an answer – so you know what to expect.

From application to answer

We want everyone who applies for a position with us to receive the information they need along the way. Your application goes through a number of fixed steps. How many steps there are, and how long it takes, depends on the type of position you have applied for.

Most application processes follow these steps:

  1. You submit your application online through Jobbnorge.
  2. We review the applications and assess who is qualified.
  3. Suitable candidates are invited to an interview.
  4. We recommend a candidate and make a decision on the appointment.
  5. All applicants receive an answer by email when the process is complete.

What happens for different types of positions?

The application process differs slightly for technical and administrative positions, permanent academic positions, and temporary academic positions. Choose the type of position that applies to you.

Technical and administrative positions

Technical and administrative positions include engineers, laboratory and IT staff, and staff working in finance, communication, student administration and HR.

The steps are:

  1. You apply for the position.
  2. First interview.
  3. A possible second interview.
  4. Appointment.

You may be asked to complete a task or a test as part of the interview.

Permanent academic positions

These are positions such as university lecturer, associate professor, senior lecturer, professor and docent. Your application is assessed by an expert committee, and the process takes longer than for other positions.

The steps are:

  1. You apply for the position.
  2. Expert assessment of your qualifications.
  3. Trial lecture and interview.
  4. Recommendation.
  5. Appointment.

You receive the full expert assessment. You cannot appeal the assessment itself, but you may submit comments on it.

Temporary academic positions

These are positions such as doctoral research fellow (PhD), postdoctoral fellow and researcher. The requirements vary between faculties and from one position to another.

The steps are:

  1. You apply for the position.
  2. Assessment by a subject committee.
  3. Interview.
  4. Possible advance approval for admission to a PhD programme.
  5. Appointment.

If you have an education from a university outside Norway, you should expect to add extra documentation.

How long does it take?

The time from the application deadline until an appointment is ready varies with the type of position.

  • For technical and administrative positions and temporary academic positions, the process is usually faster.
  • For permanent academic positions, you can expect it to take between 6 and 10 months from the application deadline until a possible appointment. The expert assessment alone normally takes up to three months after the committee has received all the documents.

We recommend that you check the email address you gave in your application, so that you do not miss any messages from us.

How you receive an answer

All applicants are informed of the outcome at the email address given in the application. You receive an answer once the recommended candidate has accepted the position.
