It is with great sorrow that we have received the news of the passing of His Majesty King Harald V.
With King Harald V, Norway has lost a true people’s king. With warmth and a remarkable sense of closeness, he met people in a way that bridged the distance between the Royal Family and the people.
In difficult times for the nation, his words and presence were a source of great comfort and reassurance.
King Harald V’s commitment to knowledge, his respect for the opportunities of young people, and his ability to embrace an increasingly diverse Norwegian society have left a profound mark on the nation.
The University of Bergen has had the honour of welcoming King Harald V on several occasions, most recently in 2021, when we celebrated the University’s 75th anniversary. The celebration took place seventy-five years after his grandfather, King Haakon VII, laid the University’s foundation stone.
King Harald V’s extraordinary work ethic and his understanding of the power of knowledge have been an inspiration.
