What the committee does
The committee has overall responsibility for the university's artistic decoration, inside and outside. This includes the selection, placement, stewardship and long-term management of artworks and artistic installations — including oversight of maintenance, preservation and security.
Gifts and acquisitions. The committee evaluates offers of artistic gifts to the university and determines suitable locations for such works, and may also initiate purchases of artworks.
Coordination. The committee works to ensure a coherent approach to artistic decoration across the university, including participation in local art committees related to building projects and cooperation with KORO (Public Art Norway). The committee may also provide advice regarding new building projects, major renovations and outdoor spaces, and seeks to ensure that the university's buildings and grounds are well maintained, representative and welcoming.
Outreach. The committee promotes awareness and understanding of the university's art collection among students, staff and visitors.
The committee was established in 2010 and succeeded two former bodies: the Art Committee and the Garden Committee.

What the committee can decide
The committee serves primarily in an advisory capacity on matters concerning buildings and outdoor environments. Within its budgetary framework, it may independently initiate measures that support its mandate, including the acquisition of artworks.
How a matter reaches the committee
If you wish to propose an artwork, offer an artistic gift to the university, or report damage or maintenance needs relating to artworks or artistic installations, contact the committee's Secretary.
The committee should be involved at an early stage in the planning of new buildings and major renovation projects, as part of the university's coordination of art and artistic decoration.
Members of the committee
The committee has eight members with personal deputies. Its composition is unusual for a UiB committee: two members come from outside the university, from the Bergen art scene and from the city council. This reflects the fact that art at UiB is also part of the city's environment.
