The Division for Research and Innovation supports the university leadership, faculties, departments, and researchers at the University of Bergen. The department works with research funding, international collaboration, innovation, doctoral education, career development programmes for early-career researchers, and research infrastructure.

Organisation

The Research and Innovation Department is headed by Director Alette Gilhus Mykkeltvedt. The department is organised into three sections:

Research Section

Head of Section: Birgit Falch

Areas of Responsibility

     External Research Funding
  • Stimulating and supporting UiB's academic communities in the mobilisation and preparation of research proposals
  • Disseminating information about funding opportunities
  • Coordinating proposal processes that require institutional prioritisation or significant institutional commitments
  • Coordinating support and capacity-building related to externally funded activities for researchers and administrative staff
  • Collaborating with UiB's Brussels Office on the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation
  • Research analysis
     Doctoral Education
  • Advising on and administering regulations, procedures, and guidelines related to PhD and Dr.Philos. programmes across the faculties
  • Coordinating progress reporting and PhD candidate surveys
  • Producing diplomas for doctoral degree ceremonies
Career Development for Early-Career Researchers
  • Responsible for UiB's career development programme for early-career researchers – Momentum

International Collaboration Section

Head of Section: Elin Kvaale

Areas of Responsibility

Internationalisation:
  • Following up international partner institutions and partner countries
  • Coordinating the university's memberships and participation in networks, organisations, and centres
  • Advising and supporting university leadership on internationalisation and international cooperation
  • Managing and administering the university's overarching cooperation agreements
  • Facilitating the university's participation in international programmes
     

Innovation Section

Head of Section: Katrine Utaaker Segadal

Areas of Responsibility

Legal Affairs
  • Assisting with the drafting of contracts, including research agreements, memoranda of understanding, confidentiality agreements, collaboration agreements, and material transfer agreements (MTAs)
  • Negotiation, advisory services, and follow-up of research contracts
  • Regulatory matters
  • Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)
Innovation 
  • Mobilising, coordinating, and supporting applications for external funding of innovation-oriented projects and centres
  • Managing the UiB Idé programme for early-stage innovation projects
  • Facilitating innovation activities together with local research and innovation advisers at the faculties
  • Coordinating cooperation with VIS
  • Serving as a hub for collaboration with external partners, industry clusters, and the public sector
UiB AI
  • Coordinating and promoting research, education, and innovation activities in artificial intelligence across UiB
  • Facilitating collaboration and networking among faculties and external partners
Research Infrastructure
  • Coordinating institutional processes and information flow related to the Research Council of Norway's INFRASTRUKTUR programme, the national initiative for research infrastructure

  • Maintaining UiB information in the EU Participant Portal
  • Quality assurance of applications and contract negotiations
  • Maintaining oversight of applications and contracts
