What the committee does
The committee organizes the election of the Rector, the Pro-Rector and the members of the University Board. It manages the electoral register — the list of who is entitled to vote — and provides guidance for the election committees at the faculties and departments, so that elections follow the same rules across the organization.
The committee also considers appeals against decisions made by the election committees at the faculties and departments.
What the committee can decide
The committee decides all matters relating to the elections, except where the Election Regulations expressly state otherwise. This is real authority, not an advisory role.
Appeals against elections at faculties and departments are decided by the Central Election Committee. If you wish to appeal a decision made by the committee itself, the appeal goes to the Committee for Student Affairs.
When are elections held?
General elections are held every four years. Temporary academic staff in teaching and research positions, and students, elect their representatives every year.
Are you entitled to vote?
You are entitled to vote if you are permanently employed at UiB in at least a half-time position, or employed for at least one year in at least a half-time position.
If you are a student, you are entitled to vote if you are registered for the current semester at the University of Bergen.
When an election is announced, the election secretariat publishes a list of everyone entitled to vote. If you believe you are missing from the list, contact the election secretariat.
Can you stand for election?
You are eligible to stand if you are entitled to vote in the election, understand Norwegian, and have not been exempted.
How to nominate a candidate
Anyone entitled to vote in an election has the right to nominate a candidate.
For the election of Rector, a nomination must have at least five and no more than ten sponsors.
How to appeal against an election
An appeal must be received no later than eight days after the election result has been announced.
