General anatomy and physiology with elements of nutrition

Undergraduate course

Course description

Objectives and Content

The teaching in physiology integrates knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and the aim is to provide an understanding of how organ systems collaborate to ensure optimal living conditions for all cells in the human body. The constant surveillance of the body's internal environment through neural and hormonal reflexes is in focus (homeostasis), as well as why this surveillance is necessary for the body's normal functions.

The learning outcomes also include an introduction to nutrition, which will give further insight into the interplay between nutrition and health. The aim is to promote consciousness towards how nutritional advice regarding oral health also affects general health and well-being.

Learning Outcomes

After completion of the course, the student should:

Knowledge

  • Be able to describe some important anatomical definitions
  • Be able to describe the normal structure of the body in general, at cell, tissue and organ level
  • To understand principles of the structure and function of the body, including homeostasis
  • Be able to describe central physiological processes in the human body, such as nervous and hormonal control, respiration and gas transport, circulation and muscular contraction, and sexual physiology
  • Be able to describe essential nutritients and their importance for dental and general health

Skills

  • Be able to explain the structure and function of the body and the individual organs in a simple but correct way.
  • Be able to explain basic physiological and nutritional conditions that can affect the health of a patient.
  • Be able to participate in academic debate with co-students and teachers within the subjects of physiology and nutrition.
