What can you study?
At the Faculty of Humanities, you can explore subjects within language, culture, history, philosophy, religion, archaeology and digital cultures. Many students who choose the humanities do not know exactly what career they want to pursue. That is perfectly fine. Study programmes within humanities provide knowledge and skills that can be applied across a wide range of professions and sectors.
What is it like to study here?
Research-based teaching
Teaching is closely linked to research, and your courses are informed by ongoing research at our departments. As a student, you will meet researchers working on topics ranging from early human history to language, digital storytelling and contemporary culture. This gives you insight into how knowledge is created and helps you develop critical and independent thinking skills.
Developing skills as you study
Your studies combine lectures, seminars, group work and independent study. You will learn to read, analyse, discuss and communicate complex ideas, both orally and in writing. These are valuable skills that are relevant beyond your specific field of study and can prepare you for many different career paths.
Campus
The Faculty of Humanities is located in and around Sydneshaugen Skole, in the heart of Bergen. Nearby, you will find libraries, the student pub, the Student Centre and several parks.
At Sydneshaugen Skole, you will find Sydnesstuen, a newly renovated student space that serves as both an academic and social meeting place. Here, you can study on your own, work in groups or take a coffee break with fellow students.
Just around the corner is Ad fontes, the student pub and a popular meeting place for humanities students. It offers free coffee and tea during the day, as well as events such as quizzes, book cafés and other social activities.
A welcoming environment
We want you to feel at home from the moment you arrive. At the beginning of each semester, we organise welcome activities that help new students get to know the faculty, the campus and their fellow students.
We have an active student community with events and activities throughout the semester. These provide opportunities to meet other students, get involved outside your studies and become part of the academic and social environment at the Faculty of Humanities.
