Short info

I am a feminist media historian who has studied gendered history of the Nordic region from the perspectives of social movements and work. Currently, I am particularly interested in the mediated circulation of information relating to gender equality and feminism during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Research

I am a gender and media historian who has mostly focused on the post-war period in Finnish and Nordic history. I did my MA and PhD studies in University of Oulu in Finland and defended my PhD dissertation in 2013. Afterwards, I have worked in the University of Stockholm, Sweden (2015-2018) and University of Turku, Finland (2018-2025) before joining the University of Bergen in May 2025.

I have studied extensively on the gendered history of professional journalism and discussion of feminism in print media. I have also an interest in queer and trans history as well as on social movements, in general. I have, for example, written on the history of the 1980's peace movement and the animal rights movement. Additionally, I am interested in digital humanities and have written about the usage of the digitised newspaper archives, in particular.

My recent publications include a scientific monograph Feminism in Finnish Print Media, 1968-1985 published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2024 alongside with two co-edited compilation books Mediated Ideologies: Nordic Views on the History of the Press and Media Cultures (Vernon Press 2024) and Transnational Feminism in Non-English Speaking Europe, c.1960-1990 (Palgrave Macmillan 2024).

Teaching

I am enthusiastic about teaching and want to improve myself as a teacher all the time. In AHKR, my main responsibility is teaching HIS108, a Survey on Women's and Gender History. Additionally, I will give occasional lectures as part of other courses and supervise masters (HIS350) and bachelor students (HIS250/HIS250L).

I am happy to discuss with students who might be interested in doing their masters or bachelor thesis on topics related to the history of gender and sexuality or media and social movements. Methodologically, I am most interested in the usage of media sources and oral history alongside the mixed-method research connected to the usage of variety of different primary sources.
